The History of F.W. Woolworth Co.
“The F.W. Woolworth Co. was among the first five-and-dime stores, which sold discounted general merchandise at fixed prices, usually five or ten cents, undercutting the prices of local merchants. It was also one of the first stores to put merchandise out for the shopping public to handle, select, and purchase. In earlier shops, merchandise was kept behind the counter and customers presented the clerk with a list of items they wished to buy.”
You won’t find a Woolworth’s in the United States or Canada these days, but I do remember one that was just up the street from us in the early eighties. I don’t remember much about it other than the lunch counter that ran along one wall. My mom used to order toasted raisin bread and coffee with her best friend Marion. Man, have times changed.

Woolworths UK is one of our favorite stores! They’ve got a great selection of toys at competitive prices. :)
