Shopping in the Dark

by Shopping Diva on May 4th, 2007

shopping bags“Smelling the washing-up liquid, feeling the chocolate bar for nuts ,shopping in the dark is quite a challenge, as hundreds of Swiss shoppers discovered last week.

The Swiss Federation of the Blind and Visually Impaired organised this rare experience for shoppers at a mall near Fribourg. swissinfo went along to take the test.

With more than 80 per cent of information coming through sight, it is very disconcerting to suddenly find yourself plunged into darkness. The darkness in the specially constructed tent was absolute.”

While I never participated in this experience, I was plunged into darkness at a mall last year. We were in a major department store and suddenly all the lights went out. IT WAS BIG TIME SCARY! I was with my daughter and by holding on to each other, we managed to manouver our way to the mall entrance. But it wasn’t easy at all. There are sooooo many things to trip over and bump into!

I think that one of the scariest thing about the experience was the fact that we didn’t know what was happening and why the lights went out, so we couldn’t really experience the shopping in the way that the Swiss Federation for the Blind intended. I really hope that organizations in North America offer something similar. I would love to participate!

*And to this day, I have no idea what plunged the store into complete darkness. I was just glad to find our way out!
