What To Do About Plastic Bags

by SP on May 9th, 2007

“The plastics industry supports the voluntary goal
of reducing plastic shopping bags in Ontario as announced today by the
province’s Environment Minister.
“Manufacturers have been working with retailers, municipalities, and
other partners for many years to promote the wise use of plastic shopping
bags, and we welcome this initiative because it will help accelerate our
efforts,” said Serge Lavoie, President and CEO of the Canadian Plastics
Industry Association (CPIA).”

I was just reading about this in the paper this morning. What I’m beginning to wander about is all the free advertising that stores receive as we wonder around the malls carrying THEIR plastic bags. How will the stores advertise themselves now??

It’s funny actually. In the last town where we lived, plastic bags were picked up every two weeks with the Blue Box. In our new town, they are totally banned. Why can one town deal with them while a town a few miles away, can’t.

And then there is the new Green Box program. We can use plastic bags to hold our kitchen scraps and once a week the town takes them away. Am I missing something here??
